This American icon made by a classic American car manufacturer, popular with everyone from families to law enforcement — is the Chevrolet Impala. Since it hit the market over 60 years ago, the Impala has undergone multiple redesigns, but its popularity and appeal haven’t faded.
The Chevrolet Impala was introduced in 1958 as the Chevrolet Bel-Air Impala, available in both sport coupe and convertible models and powered by a muscular V8 engine. The Impala was long, sleek and impossible to miss — an instant classic, brimming with ‘50s appeal. The following decade brought three new generations of the Impala which come with more engine options, four-door body styles and a power-adjustable driver’s seat.
Throughout the ‘60s, the Impala leaned out, yet still retained it’s big, sporty design. With the Impala’s fourth generation starting in 1965, a luxury version of the Impala was introduced, called the Caprice. The fourth generation also introduced a six-cylinder engine option. Another significant update to the Impala was the Impala Super Sport trim (commonly known as "SS") that offered multiple design and performance options, available in the vehicle’s third and fourth generations.
The Impala continued to sell well in its fifth and sixth generations, undergoing multiple redesigns in the ‘70s and ‘80s that brought fastback body styles, improved safety and use a taxi car and a law enforcement vehicle.
The Impala was discontinued in 1985, however, it found new life in 1994 as the Impala SS, available as a sedan and a station wagon, powered by a beefy small-block V8 and sporting a sleek, aerodynamic design. The Impala SS remained in production until 1996.
In 2000, the Impala once again made a comeback, this time for good. The reintroduced and redesigned Impala, now in its eighth generation, boasts two V6 engine options, and in 2004, a third supercharged V6 option is available. In addition to a complete redesign, upscale features like heated seats, the OnStar system, keyless entry and more are available.
The Chevrolet Impala’s ninth generation continued to push it into the modern era, bringing expanded engine options, premium interiors and improved safety and performance. 2006 brings back the V8 engine option, and new trims are introduced, including the upscale LTZ model that features leather upholstery and wood trim in the cabin.
The 2007 models feature a FlexFuel V6 engine choice and a boost in technology including navigation and XM Satellite Radio. The 2012 Impala features optional Bluetooth and a standard six-speed automatic transmission. The 2013 Impala offers yet another tech upgrade, thanks to iPod and USB ports.
In addition to a fresh new look, the 2014 Impala has great standard features like 18-inch wheels, HD headlights, three engine options, a touchscreen display, HD radio, improved safety and optional features like adaptive cruise control and a backup camera.
The 2016 Impala offers new colors, updated trim options. wireless charging and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2018 Impala brings even more updates, including a standard rearview camera and keyless ignition.
Chevrolet continues improving its iconic full-size sedan for the 2019 model year. Its luxurious interior, eight-inch touchscreen display, potent performance (thanks to either the 2.5-liter ECOTEC four-cylinder or 3.6-liter V6 engine) and fantastic technology options (including available 4G LTE connectivity and wireless smartphone charging) make the Chevrolet Impala a hard-to-beat option in its segment.
