Winter Car Care Tips

Winter Car Care Tips

With temperatures dropping, you should prep yourself and the car for the winter season. The changing climate puts stress on your car. This makes winter car care important to keep car breakdowns and unexpected car problems at bay. Here are some winter car care tips for you.

Battery Check

The battery is one of the most important components in your car. If the battery is not in good condition, you will face problems starting the car. Imagine getting stuck in the middle of your road journey with a dead battery. Batteries do not give a warning about failure. Older car batteries are more likely to fail. According to auto experts, you need to replace batteries older than three years. If the battery is in working condition, check for loose connections and signs of corrosion.

Brake Check

Brakes play an important role in stopping your car safely. Brake pads wear out normally. As their thickness reduces, the braking force also decreases. New brake pads have around 12mm thickness. If the thickness of the brake pads is less than 3mm, it is time to replace the brake pads. You should check the entire brake system for its efficiency. Start with the brake line and hoses and then check the brake drums and assemblies. Inspect the components for any leaks or signs of excessive wear and tear or damage. Replace damaged brake system components.

Tire Check

Tires play an important role in the safety of the car and passengers inside. You should check the tires for bald spots and bulges. They are signs of excessive wear and you should get tires replaced. Tread depth plays an important role in grip of the road. If the tread depth is less than 2/32 of an inch, it is time to get new tires. As temperatures drop outside, the air pressure in tires also decreases. It is not ideal to drive on tires that are not inflated to the right PSI. Lower pressure in tires increases friction that wears out tires fast. Hence, you need to ensure all tires have the recommended air pressure.

Heater and Defroster Check

As the temperature outside drops, you will need the heater to keep the passengers inside the car warm and comfortable. Hence, you need to get the heating system checked and ensure it is in working condition. Similarly, the defroster works to remove the ice and snow that gathers on the windshield. You need to check the defroster at the front and back to ensure they are in working condition.

Wipers Check

Occasional rain and snowfall are common during the winter season. You will need the wipers to clean the windshield frequently. Wiper blades are made of rubber or synthetic materials that develop cracks in hot and cold temperatures. Check the wiper blades for cracks or other signs of damage. If the old wiper blades cannot clear the windshield effectively, get new wiper blades.

The above car care tips will make your car roadworthy and prepare it for the rigid weather ahead. These basic car maintenance tips can save you from unexpected costs that can blow your budget.
