Minivan vs. SUV: Which One Should You Buy?

If you have a large family, you will need to buy a vehicle which would allow you to travel together. The six- to seven-seater vehicle is ideal for big families and you can choose between the minivan and SUV. If you haven’t traveled in these cars previously, it will be difficult to choose between them. We have provided some good and bad points about both vehicles which can help you decide the right one for your family.

Minivan: Good and Bad

The minivan has been one of the popular options for big families. It has ample passenger space and six to seven people can travel comfortably in a minivan. The legroom and shoulder room for the second- and third-row are great and even the people sitting at the very back will not complain nor request travel breaks to stretch out. The minivan has a lower ground clearance that offers several advantages like easy entry and exit, even for children. It is also easy to load and unload stuff. Plus, its unique sliding door spells many advantages, including wider entry space allowing you to easily get in and out of the car even in tight parking spots. Minivans are fuel-efficient and some minivan models give you a gas mileage of up to 19 mpg in the city, up to 28 mpg on highways and up to 22 mpg combined.

Some negative things about the minivan are its average engines which might not be ideal for towing. A low ground clearance also means it has no or limited off-road capabilities. If you drive a minivan on rugged terrain, the undercarriage would suffer damage. There are only limited models available in the minivan market with all-wheel drive or diesel engines.

SUV: Good and Bad

SUVs are specifically designed with large families in mind. They have enough passenger space to accommodate six to seven adults and powerful engines to transport them from one place to another. You have many models to choose from and if you don’t need a full-size SUV, you can also choose a compact crossover similar to a large SUV.

SUVs have a higher ground clearance which delivers good off-road capabilities. You can easily drive SUVs on hilly roads or through dense forests without fear of getting stuck in the mud. The reason is that most SUVs have an all-wheel drive system that allows you to drive the car through small mud puddles or shallow streams. SUVs are built strong and heavy so you can also drive it in rough weather.

Since SUVs have a powerful engine, you can also use them for towing a camper or a boat. There are many misconceptions that the SUV is a fuel guzzler, which is not true. There are many fuel-efficient SUV models which provide up to 23 mpg in the city, up to 34 mpg on highways and up to 29 mpg combined.

Some of the negatives about the SUV are its high ground clearance and conventional doors making it hard to get in and out of the car. The same problem also comes when loading and unloading luggage. The higher ground clearance also affects its handling and performance to a certain extent.
